Ringling College Adds 2D Character Animation to World-Renowned Computer Animation Program

Sarasota's Ringling College of Art and Design has expanded its offerings with a new 2D Character Animation program. This addition joins the institution's globally recognized Computer Animation department, which has held the No. 1 ranking in the world for consecutive years.

The new program addresses student demand and the growth of the independent animation market. It aims to equip students with the skills to create original intellectual property and professional-quality animated content for various platforms, including film, television, streaming, games, and emerging media.

Ringling College's Computer Animation department boasts a strong legacy. Alumni recently earned multiple Emmy Awards and contributed to the 2026 Oscar-nominated films KPop Demon Hunters, Elio, and Zootopia 2. Sixty-six graduates worked on these Oscar-nominated productions.

The 2D Character Animation curriculum blends traditional animation techniques with modern production tools. Students will learn to combine draftsmanship with contemporary production methods. A Creative Entrepreneurship Certificate will integrate into the curriculum, providing practical skills for developing, producing, and promoting creative work.

Paul Downs, Head of Ringling College's Computer Animation Department, stated, "We're excited to build on the success of our 3D Animation program by expanding into 2D Animation, a creative path students have been asking for. With the indie animation market growing and providing new ways for artists to build their own audiences, the timing couldn't be better. We want to help our students create opportunities—not wait for them."

Graduates of the 2D Character Animation program will be prepared for roles at major studios, freelance careers, or building their own creative ventures.
