High Surf Warning Issued: Life-Threatening Conditions Expected
A High Surf Warning has been issued for coastal areas of Alabama and Northwest Florida from Friday morning until Sunday morning, with dangerously large breaking waves and life-threatening rip currents expected. Stay out of the water and off coastal infrastructure.
Residents and visitors in Mobile Coastal, Baldwin Coastal, Escambia Coastal, Santa Rosa Coastal, and Okaloosa Coastal counties are advised to stay out of the water due to a High Surf Warning issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Mobile, AL. This warning is effective from Friday, October 9, at 7:00 AM CDT until Sunday, October 11, at 10:00 AM CDT.
Dangerous breaking waves are expected to reach 6 to 10 feet developing Friday morning in the surf zone. These waves will build to 12 to 18 feet over Alabama beaches and 20 to 25 feet over northwest Florida beaches by Friday night, likely lingering through Saturday. Surf will begin to abate Saturday night but will remain high through Sunday morning. A High Rip Current Risk is also in effect through late Saturday night.
The NWS warns that breaking waves can sweep people off jetties and docks, and into dangerous seas. Life-threatening swimming conditions and significant beach erosion are expected. Rip currents can sweep even the strongest swimmers away from shore into deeper water.
Actionable Instructions: Everyone should remain out of the water due to life-threatening surf conditions. Stay off of jetties, piers, and other waterside infrastructure. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Do not swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
