An Extreme Storm Surge Warning has been issued for Santa Rosa Coastal, impacting Bagdad, Gulf Breeze, and Navarre, urging immediate evacuation due to life-threatening surge, hurricane-force winds, and potential flooding and tornadoes.
SANTA ROSA COASTAL, FL — The National Weather Service (NWS) in Mobile, AL, has issued an Extreme Storm Surge Warning for Santa Rosa Coastal, effective immediately, October 8 at 9:57 PM CDT. This warning impacts Bagdad, Gulf Breeze, and Navarre. Residents in these areas are advised to leave immediately if evacuation orders are given to avoid being cut off from emergency services.
Life-threatening storm surge of 4-7 feet above ground is possible through Saturday morning, with potential for localized inundation greater than 6 feet. Extensive damage is anticipated, including structural damage to buildings, with some potentially washing away. Near-shore escape routes and secondary roads are at risk of being washed out or severely flooded. Evacuation efforts should be completed urgently before driving conditions become unsafe.
Hurricane-force winds of 75-95 mph with gusts up to 110 mph are expected from early Friday afternoon until early Saturday morning. This is equivalent to a Category 1 or 2 hurricane, posing a life-threatening wind threat. Residents should move to safe shelter before winds become hazardous. Extensive roof damage, snapped trees, impassable roads, and widespread power and communication outages are expected.
A Flood Watch is in effect, with 4-8 inches of rain expected, and locally higher amounts possible, leading to potential major flooding. Emergency plans should include the possibility of evacuations and rescues. Additionally, the NWS forecasts a favorable situation for several tornadoes, with a few possibly intense. Listen for tornado watches and warnings and be prepared to shelter quickly.
