High Surf Warning Issued: Dangerous Waves and Rip Currents Expected
A High Surf Warning and High Rip Current Risk have been issued for coastal areas of Mobile, Baldwin, Escambia, Santa Rosa, and Okaloosa, with dangerous waves up to 25 feet and life-threatening rip currents expected from Friday morning through Sunday afternoon.
Residents and visitors in Mobile Coastal, Baldwin Coastal, Escambia Coastal, Santa Rosa Coastal, and Okaloosa Coastal areas are advised to stay out of the water due to a High Surf Warning and High Rip Current Risk issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Mobile AL.
The High Surf Warning is in effect from October 9 at 4:08 AM CDT until October 11 at 12:00 AM CDT. Dangerously large breaking waves of 6 to 10 feet are expected to develop Friday morning, building to 12 to 18 feet over Alabama beaches and 20 to 25 feet over northwest Florida beaches by late Friday afternoon. These heights are predicted to linger through Friday night before abating late Friday night and Saturday.
A High Rip Current Risk is also in effect through Sunday afternoon. The NWS warns that breaking waves can sweep people off jetties and docks into dangerous seas, and life-threatening swimming conditions and significant beach erosion are expected. Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water.
Instructions: Everyone must remain out of the water due to life-threatening surf conditions. Stay off of jetties, piers, and other waterside infrastructure. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Do not swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
