Every year, the San Joaquin County Office of Education (SJCOE) hosts the Chronic Absenteeism Summit to tackle truancy head-on across San Joaquin County. The guiding principle of the summit remains clear: real, lasting change is rooted in relationships. The day kicked off with inspiring "Ignite Speakers" who set a powerful tone, sharing personal stories of resilience and overcoming significant barriers. Their experiences served as a reminder of the complex challenges students face before ever stepping foot into a classroom. A key highlight was the student panel, which brought together high schoolers from Linden Unified, Venture Academy, Manteca Unified, Discovery ChalleNGe Academy, and Lincoln Unified. The panelists spoke candidly about what makes school difficult or enjoyable, offering valuable insight into how teachers, educators, and administrators can improve their day-to-day interactions with students to build trust and belonging. It takes an entire community to keep youth engaged. From school leaders and educators to law enforcement officers, a diverse cross-section of partners gathered with one shared goal: finding proactive solutions. Special thanks to United Way of San Joaquin for their continual support in making this work possible. Together, we are bridging gaps to ensure every student succeeds.

Early Literacy Community of Practice Begins New Year

The San Joaquin County Early Literacy Community of Practice (COP) kicked off a new year on Thursday, Sept. 10, at a dynamic workshop-style session focused on strengthening literacy practices that support all learners. Made up of educators from schools across San Joaquin County, the COP started the day at the SJCOE Insightful Morning event, featuring literacy expert Pati Montgomery. This first Insightful Morning event of the year at the SJCOE included a broader audience in the morning session. But in the afternoon, the COP met with Montgomery for a deeper discussion on strategies to bring back to their home schools and districts. The COP first met in 2024. It was created when San Joaquin County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Troy Brown was joined by superintendents of all 14 county school districts, the president of Teachers College of San Joaquin, and the superintendent/president of San Joaquin Delta College in signing an Early Literacy Declaration of Support. They came together again in February 2026 to update that declaration and reaffirm their commitment to early literacy in San Joaquin County. See photos and more from the Insightful Morning with Pati Montgomery on the SJCOE Facebook page. Keep up with countywide literacy efforts on the SJCOE Early Literacy webpage.
