Beach Hazards Statement Issued: Increased Rip Current, Sneaker Wave Risk
A Beach Hazards Statement is in effect for San Francisco, Northern Monterey Bay, and Southern Monterey Bay and Big Sur Coast, warning of increased rip current risk and sneaker waves with breaking waves up to 16 feet from Saturday morning through Monday afternoon.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Beach Hazards Statement for San Francisco, Northern Monterey Bay, and Southern Monterey Bay and Big Sur Coast, effective from Saturday morning through Monday afternoon. An increased risk of rip currents and sneaker waves is expected, with breaking waves anticipated to reach up to 16 feet.
A Coastal Flood Advisory is also in effect from 9 AM Friday to 3 PM PDT Tuesday. Up to 1.4 feet of inundation above ground level is possible in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. Flooding of lots, parks, and roads is expected, with isolated road closures possible. High tides will affect coastal trails, access to low-lying beaches, and bring water and waves further up the beach than typical.
Dangerous conditions are forecast along the shoreline. The NWS advises the public to stay off jetties, piers, rocks, and other waterside infrastructure. Remain out of the water to avoid hazardous surf and never turn your back on the ocean. If travel is required, allow extra time as some roads may be closed. Do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Take necessary actions to protect flood-prone property. Monitor local weather, surf, and tide forecasts at www.weather.gov/mtr.
