Beach Hazards & Coastal Flood Advisory for Bay Area Coasts
A Beach Hazards Statement and Coastal Flood Advisory are in effect for San Francisco, Northern Monterey Bay, and Southern Monterey Bay and Big Sur Coast areas, bringing dangerous surf, rip currents, and potential flooding through Tuesday, October 12.
Residents and visitors along the San Francisco, Northern Monterey Bay, and Southern Monterey Bay and Big Sur Coast areas are advised to prepare for a Beach Hazards Statement and Coastal Flood Advisory, issued by the National Weather Service San Francisco CA.
A Beach Hazards Statement is in effect from Saturday morning through Monday afternoon, with an increased risk of rip currents and sneaker waves expected. Breaking waves could reach up to 16 feet. Dangerous conditions are forecast along the shoreline, including sneaker waves, strong rip currents, and large breaking waves. Stay off jetties, piers, rocks, and other waterside infrastructure. Remain out of the water to avoid hazardous surf and NEVER turn your back on the ocean.
A Coastal Flood Advisory is also in effect from 9 AM Friday to 3 PM PDT Tuesday, October 12. Up to 1.2 feet of inundation above ground level is possible in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. Flooding of lots, parks, and roads is expected, with only isolated road closures anticipated. High tides will result in flooding along coastal trails, cut off access to some low-lying beaches and coastal areas, and bring water and waves farther up the beach than typical.
If travel is required, allow extra time as some roads may be closed. Do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Take necessary actions to protect flood-prone property. Monitor local weather, surf, and tide forecasts at www.weather.gov/mtr.
