Tropical Storm Watch Issued for San Diego Coastal Areas

A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for San Diego County Coastal Areas, including Oceanside, Carlsbad, Chula Vista, and San Diego, from the NWS San Diego CA, urging residents to prepare for hazardous winds, potential major flooding, and significant coastal impacts.

A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for San Diego County Coastal Areas, including Oceanside, Carlsbad, Chula Vista, and San Diego, by the National Weather Service (NWS) San Diego CA. This watch is effective immediately as of October 10 at 8:02 AM PDT and will expire at 4:15 PM PDT today.

Residents in affected areas should act now to complete preparations for hazardous wind. Peak wind forecasts are 10-20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph, but there is a potential for winds between 39 to 57 mph. Prepare for limited wind damage, including potential damage to porches, awnings, carports, and sheds. Unanchored mobile homes and lightweight objects should be secured. Scattered power and communications outages are possible.

A Flood Watch is also in effect. Emergency plans should include the potential for major flooding from heavy rain, with peak rainfall amounts around 1 inch. Evacuations and rescues are likely, and residents are strongly advised to take protective actions, especially in flood-vulnerable areas. Heed any flood watches and warnings, as failure to act could result in serious injury or loss of life. Major rainfall flooding may prompt evacuations and rescues, and rivers and tributaries may rapidly overflow their banks.

While true storm surge is unlikely, significant coastal flooding and beach erosion are expected due to tides over 7 feet, high surf, and increased onshore winds. Do not make plans to go to the beach. Dangerous swimming conditions due to high surf and strong rip currents are anticipated. Follow instructions from local officials and monitor forecasts.
