Tropical Storm Rachel Approaches San Diego: Coastal Flooding, Heavy Rain, High Winds Expected
San Diego County is under a Tropical Storm Watch as Rachel approaches, bringing expected coastal flooding, heavy rain, and high winds from late tonight through early Sunday afternoon.
San Diego County residents should prepare for significant impacts from Tropical Storm Rachel, expected to affect the region from late tonight through early Sunday afternoon. A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for all of San Diego County Coastal Areas, Deserts, Mountains, and Valleys.
The National Weather Service in San Diego reports Tropical Storm Rachel is approximately 400 miles south of San Diego, moving north-northeast at 30 mph. It is expected to make landfall south of the U.S./Mexico Border tonight, bringing coastal flooding, heavy rain, and strong winds.
Coastal areas face a high threat of significant flooding and beach erosion due to high tides over 7 feet, high surf peaking at 6 to 9 feet on Sunday, and gusty onshore winds. Hazardous swimming conditions are also anticipated.
Widespread rain is expected Sunday, with flash and urban flooding probable, especially in the mountains and deserts. The San Diego River at Fashion Valley is forecast to peak at 8.0 feet (action/monitor stage) just before noon on Sunday; those nearby should monitor forecasts. Strong sustained winds and gusts of 40-55 mph are expected, with localized gusts up to 60 mph in mountain ridges and passes. Power and communications outages are possible due to downed tree limbs and snapped trees.
Follow advice from local officials regarding potential evacuations. If you live in a flood-prone area, plan to move to safe shelter on higher ground. Monitor weather.gov, NOAA Weather Radio, and local news outlets for updates. The next update is expected around 8 PM PDT, or sooner if conditions change.
