Beach Hazards Statement Issued for San Diego and Orange County Coasts

Residents and visitors in San Diego and Orange County coastal areas are advised to remain out of the water due to hazardous swimming conditions, or to stay near occupied lifeguard towers. Rock jetties are particularly dangerous, and the public should stay off them. The National Weather Service (NWS) San Diego has issued a Beach Hazards Statement effective today, October 4, 2026, at 12:04 PM PDT, through October 9, 2026, at 11:00 PM PDT.

Minor coastal flooding and dangerous rip currents are expected due to a combination of high tides and elevated surf. Elevated surf of 3-6 feet is forecast for south and southwest-facing beaches. High tides are anticipated to peak between 6.5 and 7.0 feet during morning and evening hours throughout the affected period.

The NWS warns of an increased risk of ocean drowning, with rip currents capable of pulling swimmers and surfers out to sea. Waves can also wash individuals off beaches and rocks, and capsize small boats nearshore. Moderate flooding of seawater is possible over vulnerable low-lying coastal areas, and moderate beach erosion is also possible to likely. The NWS indicates there is a moderate chance this statement may be upgraded to a Coastal Flood Advisory and/or High Surf Advisory, and may also be extended into the weekend.
