Father Matt Smyser Ordained to Priesthood by Diocese of Lexington

mouse Matt Smyser Ordination Mass With great joy and thanksgiving, the Catholic Diocese of Lexington celebrates the priestly ordination of Father Matt Smyser, who was ordained to the sacred priesthood by Bishop John Stowe, OFM Conv.Surrounded by family, friends, clergy, religious, and the faithful of the diocese, Father Smyser answered God’s call with a profound “yes,” committing his life to the service of Christ and His Church. Through the laying on of hands and the prayer of ordination, he was configured to Christ the High Priest and entrusted with the sacred ministry of preaching the Gospel, celebrating the sacraments, and shepherding God’s people. His ordination is a moment of grace not only for Father Smyser, but for the entire Diocese of Lexington. It reminds us of the beauty of a life given in service, the power of prayerful discernment, and the continued need to encourage and support vocations to the priesthood, diaconate, and religious life. Please join us in praying for Father Matt Smyser as he begins his priestly ministry. May the Lord bless him with wisdom, humility, courage, and joy as he serves the people of God.Father Matt Smyser, congratulations — and thank you for saying “yes” to God’s call. Food Pantries Due to the ongoing government shutdown, many working families, seniors, and children are facing a sudden gap in food-support benefits. The Catholic Charities Diocese of Lexington reminds us of our moral responsibility:“In hearing the cry of the poor, we are asked to enter into the heart of God, who is always concerned for the needs of his children…” (Chancellor’s statement, November 2025)In response, our local Catholic parishes and food-pantry partners are actively working — now more than ever — to support those in need.  Where to donate The Diocese of Lexington’s Annual Appeal is a visible expression of our unity as the Body of Christ.  Each donation to the fund is a sign that we believe in the Gospel message to “love one another as I have loved you” [John 15:12]. It is an affirmation of our belief that “faith without works is useless” [James 2:20].  It demonstrates that we believe that whatever you do to others, you do to Jesus. Learn more The Catholic Diocese of Lexington covers 50 counties in Central and Eastern Kentucky. We invite you to join us as we follow Christ in worship and in service to God’s people. Obituary: David Mathieu

David Peter Mathieu, 72, of Grayson, Kentucky, formerly of Massachusetts, departed this life peacefully to be with his Lord at his residence on Friday, March 27, 2026.Born on June 2, 1953, in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, David was the beloved son of the late Ernest and Edna Pinault Mathieu. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, John Mathieu.David was a proud patriot who honorably served his country in the United States Air Force. His dedication to service reflected his steadfast character and deep love for his country. Following his military service, David worked as a maintenance mechanic, a trade perfectly suited to his remarkable talent for understanding how things worked. Known by many as someone who “could fix anything,” David had a gift for taking things apart and putting them back together—whether electronics, engines, or everyday household items. His curiosity and skill were matched only by his patience and determination.David found great joy in life’s simple pleasures. He loved being on his boat and scaring everyone by saying “I never go over 90” and the freedom of the open road on his motorcycle to which he was coursed by his daughter to continue riding. With his signature railroad conductor hat and easygoing style, he was unmistakably himself—earning the affectionate title of the “cool uncle” among his nieces and nephews. Those who knew him will remember his quiet strength, his steady presence, and the way he loved—quietly, but fiercely.Above all else, David cherished his family. He was a devoted father to his daughter, Sarah (Joseph) Gagnon of Grayson, Kentucky, and a proud and loving Papa to Lucas Parker, Nathan Parker, Hudson Gagnon, and Emmett Gagnon. His grandchildren were a source of immense pride and joy, and he treasured every moment spent with them.He is also survived by his brother, Robert Mathieu of Massachusetts; three sisters, Jeannette Albert, Sue McNeil, and Debra Lasorsa, all of Maine; and a host of extended family members and friends who will deeply mourn his passing and carry his memory forward.A Memorial Service will be conducted at 12:00 Noon on Friday, April 10, 2026, at Malone Funeral Home with Military Honors. Friends may call from 11:00 AM until the service hour on Friday, April 10, 2026.Condolences may be shared with the family at www.malonefuneralhome.com.
