Eckerd Students Forge Real-World Collaboration Skills at St. Pete's spARK Labs

Eckerd College students recently visited spARK Labs by ARK Invest in Saint Petersburg’s Innovation District, gaining firsthand insight into the importance of collaboration in the modern business world. The visit was part of the 'Resilience at Work: Promoting Creativity and Wellbeing in Teams' course, led by Associate Professor of Management Jennifer Miner Knippen, Ph.D.

This course aims to equip students with practical skills in team effectiveness, personal wellbeing, and collaborative innovation, extending learning beyond traditional classroom settings. Students engaged in various activities, including a ropes course, a visit to the Eckerd College Community Farm, and observing campus teams like the Eckerd College Search and Rescue Team (EC-SAR).

First-year student Hayden Watson, from Mount Washington, Kentucky, observed EC-SAR in action. She noted their efficient collaboration, stating, "It was just surprising to see how everybody knew exactly what they were doing and where they needed to be." Watson, who wants to study marine science, found the experience valuable, especially after previous group work in high school that often resulted in one person doing all the work.

At spARK Labs, a nonprofit innovation hub for founders and entrepreneurs, students heard from CEO and President Becca Brown and other local entrepreneurs. Discussions focused on collaboration, problem-solving, and the growing role of artificial intelligence in business. One innovative idea highlighted was Rovex, a robotics company that partnered with BayCare Health System in April to evaluate robotics for hospital operations and patient transport workflows.

Dr. Knippen emphasizes that the skills and knowledge fostering a strong student also prepare them for a successful career. The course helps students understand what it means to be a leader, work effectively with others, and maintain personal values in their professional lives. Students also received support for presentation skills at the Rahall Communication Center, which Hayden and her group utilized before their first college presentation.
