Montana Connections Park TIF District Offers Land and Developer Loans in West Butte

The Montana Connections Targeted Economic Development District (MCTEDD), also known as Montana Connections Park, was approved with a Tax Increment Financing provision (TIF) and has a base year of 2023. TIF is a state authorized, locally driven funding mechanism that allows cities and counties to direct property tax dollars that accrue from new development, within a specifically designated district, to community and economic development activities. This district has some overlap with the Tax Increment Financing Industrial District #2 (TIFID) which was a district created in 1994 with a TIF provision. That TIF provision sunset in 6/30/2022. Montana Connections still has county owned property for sale and loan funds available to developers to assist with project development.Montana Connections utilized TIF to construct new roads, bring sewer, water, industrial water, natural gas, electrical power, and fiber to much of the developable property in the district. The TIFID is located west of Butte at the intersection of I-15 and I-90.Meetings are on a ad-hoc basis, please check the calendar for upcoming meetings.

Basin Creek Edible Food Forest to Have Limited Access Summer 2026 Due to Fire Abatement

2026 AnnouncementThe Basin Creek Edible Food Forest will be of limited access this summer, as Basin Creek Park will experience temporary closures for fire abatement purposes. Sorry for any inconveniences this may cause!What Is It?The Basin Creek Edible Food Forest is an ongoing project to establish Butte's very first public edible food forest in Basin Creek Park. Part of this project was made possible with funding from the 2021 Innovation Grant in which Butte-Silver Bow was awarded. By time of completion, the forest will consist of various fruit trees, along with additional edible shrubs and plants. The forest floor will be covered with Arborist woodchips which will help prevent the growth of wild grass and various weeds, as well as hold moisture that is crucial to the forest's success and fruit production.Edible Forest LayoutPictured below is the current layout for the edible forest with a numbered map. In time, other edible species will be added to open areas. Stodden Park Hazard Tree Project in Litigation Phase; 5-Year Reforestation Plan Underway

Stay Tuned! What Is It?The Stodden Park Hazard Tree Abatement and Sustainable Urban Reforestation Project is our newest project here in Butte-Silver Bow Urban Forestry that we will be taking on starting in the Summer of 2024. The purpose of this 5-year project is to remove hazardous trees that pose a severe risk not only to park visitors, but to neighboring houses and other public property as well. During a tree risk assessment conducted back in May of 2023, it was determined that 170 trees had High or Extreme risk ratings in relation to the safety of the public. The removal of high-risk trees is and has been a primary priority of the BSB Urban Forest Master Plan (UFMP), which gives this project the utmost importance. This project has been made possible with funding from the USDA Forest Service Inflation Reduction Act Grant. Trees to Be RemovedHere is a current map from our Tree Inventory that displays all trees that make up the entirety of Stodden Park. For the sake of this project, the trees that are to be removed due to High or Extreme risk ratings are indicated by either green or yellow dots. The green dots represent the Cottonwood (Populus) species and the yellow dots indicate the Willow (Salix) species.What Can You Expect to See in the Future?Given that the Stodden Park Project is an expected 5-year project, we have established a year-by-year plan that will help keep us on track for success. Each year, our goal is to remove 35 of the highest priority High or Extreme risk trees. In addition, we intend to plant at least 50 sustainable replacement trees each year to increase the diversity of the tree species found within Stodden Park. Apart from the removal and planting of trees, we plan to conduct public outreach each month. We also intend to host a public event at Stodden Park each year to educate and inform the public on the progress of the project. We hope that these methods of outreach will encourage public engagement not only in the Stodden Park Project itself, but in the process of diversifying Butte-Silver Bow's Urban Forest as a whole as well.2024 Winter Tree RemovalsThe process of removing trees has officially begun! For removal, we are first prioritizing the most hazardous cottonwoods given the state of decay they are in. Many of these mature cottonwoods are experiencing severe internal rot to the extent that they are nearly hollow. The internal rotting seen within these trees is leading to progressive trunk failure causing many of these trees to splinter. This fragile state makes these cottonwoods very hazardous to the public, hence why removal is necessary. Below are some pictures to display how the rotting has impacted these mature trees.2025/2026 UpdateIn 2025, the Stodden Park Project was terminated until further notice. In the time that we were able to tackle this project, 72 hazardous cottonwoods were removed! Roughly 150 trees were purchased and planted with the funding that remained available. In addition, we have purchased more equipment that will help us become more efficient in our urban forestry work. Yu Fong Obituary

Yu Fong passed away peacefully on April 9, 2026, at the age of 95, leaving behind a legacy of love, strength, and devotion to family.She was born on May 22, 1930, in Kaiping, Guangdong, China. She received her education in her hometown and married Wai Fong in 1947. Their marriage was one of deep love and harmony, and together they built a life grounded in mutual care and devotion. She was known for her kindness, her strength in managing the household, and her deep respect and devotion to her parents and elders. She held high standards in raising her children, guiding them with both discipline and love.After leaving her hometown, she lived in Hong Kong before immigrating to the United States in 1976. With the support of family and friends, she adapted quickly to her new life and worked diligently for many years in the garment industry. In retirement, she enjoyed a life of comfort and fulfillment, traveling to many places around the world and spending time playing mahjong with family and friends.She is survived by six children, twelve grandchildren, and eighteen great-grandchildren, whose lives stand as a testament to the loving legacy she built.Her passing leaves an immeasurable sense of loss and longing among her family. Her voice, her presence, and her spirit will forever remain in their hearts.
