As electric bikes become more common on local streets, the North Mankato Police Department is reminding residents to be aware of the rules and safety guidelines for operating e-bikes and e-scooters.

The department issued a reminder on March 30, 2026, emphasizing that riders should know where e-bikes are permitted, adhere to traffic laws, and maintain safe speeds. E-bikes are allowed on streets and, depending on their class, on certain trails and sidewalks. However, Class 3 e-bikes are prohibited on trails.

For both e-bike and e-scooter riders, the state law requires riders under 18 years old to wear a helmet. Riders must be at least 15 years old to operate an e-bike and at least 12 years old for e-scooters. While helmets are not mandated by state law for riders 18 and older, wearing one is always recommended for safety.

To ensure safety for everyone, riders are encouraged to travel at 15 mph or less when on sidewalks, city trails, and in parks. The North Mankato Police Department also stressed the importance of following all traffic laws, yielding to pedestrians, and using clear signals when passing or turning.

Residents can find more information about e-bike and e-scooter safety and regulations by visiting the city's website.
