Elton L. Monson, 92, of Morris, passed away peacefully on April 17, 2026, at the Pointe Assisted Living in Morris. He was born on November 2, 1933, in Gardner, Illinois, the youngest son of the late Louis and Hannah (Hill) Monson.Elton is survived by his children, Eric (Susan) Monson and Sharry (Vernon) Leming; his grandchildren, Lexi Monson, Anthonee Monson, Holden Leming, Cullen Leming, and Hattie Monson; and his sister, Mary Shugart.He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, Lorraine Welch and Betty Maskel, and his brother, Lyle Monson.Elton attended Morris High School and graduated with the class of 1953. During his high school years, he was proud to be a member of the all-star basketball team, an achievement that reflected both his athletic ability and his competitive spirit.After high school, Elton enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He was stationed in Okinawa during the Korean War, and although he was fortunate never to be called to the front line, his military service had a lasting impact on him. It shaped his deep respect for fellow veterans and inspired a lifetime of support for those who served. He remained an active veteran in both word and deed, always ready to lend a hand, share encouragement, or stand beside another veteran in need.Elton was a devoted member of the Morris VFW and the American Legion, where he gave his time and energy in support of his fellow servicemen and women. Together with his life partner, Kathy, the VAC of Grundy County and Amvets, helping create lasting resources and community support for veterans in the area. His commitment to veterans was not limited to organizations or titles. It was a personal calling that guided much of his life, and he helped countless veterans over the years through his kindness, advocacy, and willingness to serve.In addition to his military and community involvement, Elton worked for many years as a laborer with Laborers Union 75 out of Joliet until his retirement. Even after retirement, he continued to assist and work for the office of the Local Laborers Union, remaining connected to the people and causes that mattered to him.A visitation for Elton will be held on Monday April 27, 2026 from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm at the UC Davis-Callahan Funeral Home in Morris. A celebration of Elton’s life will follow at 12:30 pm, officiated by Funeral Celebrant Carol Walker. Elton will be laid to rest at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood with military honors.An online guestbook has been made for the family, where you may sign the guestbook, share memories and photographs.
