Luigi Mangione Pleads Guilty to Federal Stalking Charges in CEO's Death

NEW YORK — Luigi Mangione pleaded guilty to federal stalking charges on Wednesday, admitting to the shooting death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Mangione made his admission in a federal court in New York.

During the hearing, Mangione confirmed his responsibility for Thompson's death. Authorities apprehended Mangione in October 2023 in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania, after a nationwide manhunt. The arrest followed the shooting of Thompson on December 2, 2020, outside a hotel in New York City.

Federal prosecutors stated Mangione tracked Thompson for months before the shooting. Court documents indicated Mangione used encrypted messaging applications and virtual private networks to conceal his activities. He reportedly harbored grievances against UnitedHealthcare stemming from a dispute over disability benefits for his ex-wife.

Investigators found a manifesto and additional writings from Mangione outlining his intent to harm insurance executives. The federal plea resolves the federal charges against him. Mangione still faces separate murder charges in New York state court related to Thompson's death.
