SAINT CLOUD – Residents served by the Bellalago water distribution system were recently notified that a sample taken on August 3, 2026, showed orthophosphate levels below the Florida Department of Environmental Protection's required minimum concentration. The sample measured 0.14 mg/L, falling short of the 0.7 mg/L standard.
Orthophosphate is a food-grade additive used by water utilities to prevent lead, copper, and iron from leaching into drinking water and to reduce calcium buildup. While this incident did not pose an emergency, Toho Water, the utility provider, is informing customers as is their right.
According to Toho Water, a system audit identified several closed grid valves as the cause for the low orthophosphate levels. These valves were restricting water flow, leading to a drop in chemical concentration. To address the issue, Toho has reopened the closed valves to restore proper system connectivity and circulation.
The utility has also increased water quality testing to ensure ongoing compliance with orthophosphate levels. Toho Water has confirmed that orthophosphate levels have since returned to normal.
Customers with concerns or questions can contact Toho’s Environmental Compliance department at 407-944-5000 or by emailing [email protected]. Residents are encouraged to share this information with others who drink the water, particularly those in apartments, nursing homes, schools, and businesses, by posting the notice in public areas or distributing copies.
