Riverview Residents May Claim Share of $167.5M ATM Fee Settlement with Visa & Mastercard

Riverview residents who used independent ATMs between October 24, 2007, and August 14, 2026, may be eligible to claim a portion of a $167.5 million class action settlement involving Visa and Mastercard. The lawsuit, filed in 2011, alleged that the payment processing giants prevented independent ATM operators from offering lower fees, leading to higher costs for consumers.

The settlement fund totals $167.5 million, with Visa contributing $88.775 million and Mastercard adding $78.725 million. This money will be distributed among eligible claimants. Independent ATMs are typically found in local convenience stores, hotels, bars, and gas stations, and are not owned by banks or other financial institutions.

The lawsuit, known as Burke v. Visa Inc., claimed that Visa and Mastercard's rules restricted how these independent operators could set their access fees. Plaintiffs argued that these restrictions prevented transactions from being processed through competing networks, which could have resulted in lower fees for consumers. Visa and Mastercard have denied these allegations but agreed to the settlement without admitting liability.

The deadline for Riverview residents to file a claim is February 10, 2027. The amount each person receives will depend on the total number of valid claims submitted and the qualifying transactions reported. A court hearing is scheduled for February 17, 2027, to determine if the settlement will receive final approval.
