Rip Current Statement Issued for Kenedy, Willacy, Cameron Islands
A Rip Current Statement is in effect until 7:00 PM CDT today for Kenedy, Willacy, and Cameron Islands, warning of dangerous rip currents and coastal flooding; the NWS advises swimming near lifeguards and exercising caution.
A Rip Current Statement has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Brownsville, TX, effective immediately, October 11, at 10:16 AM CDT until 7:00 PM CDT this evening for Kenedy Island, Willacy Island, and Cameron Island counties. A Coastal Flood Advisory is also in effect until 7:00 AM CDT Monday.
Dangerous rip currents are expected, which can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water. Nuisance flooding is also anticipated, with water potentially reaching or pushing into the dunes on South Padre Island. Driving on the beach will be limited, with vehicles, except those with four-wheel drive and high wheel bases, unable to be driven north of Public Beach Access #3. Minor to moderate beach erosion is expected.
The NWS advises beachgoers to swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Do not swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help. For those needing to travel during the Coastal Flood Advisory, allow extra time as some roads may be closed. Do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Residents are advised to take necessary actions to protect flood-prone property.
