Rip Current Statement, Coastal Flood & High Surf Advisories Issued
A Rip Current Statement, Coastal Flood Advisory, and High Surf Advisory have been issued for Kenedy Island, Willacy Island, and Cameron Island counties, urging caution due to dangerous rip currents, minor coastal flooding, and large waves.
Residents and visitors in Kenedy Island, Willacy Island, and Cameron Island counties are urged to exercise extreme caution as the National Weather Service (NWS) in Brownsville has issued a Rip Current Statement, Coastal Flood Advisory, and High Surf Advisory.
A Rip Current Statement is in effect until Sunday evening, October 11, at 7:00 PM CDT, indicating dangerous rip currents. Inexperienced swimmers are advised to remain out of the water due to these dangerous conditions. If caught in a rip current, the NWS advises to relax and float, not to swim against the current. Swimmers should try to swim parallel to the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help. Swim near a lifeguard.
A Coastal Flood Advisory is active until Monday, October 12, at 7:00 AM CDT. Minor coastal flooding is expected, with water potentially reaching or pushing into the dunes on South Padre Island. Vehicles, excluding those with four-wheel drive and high wheel bases, will be unable to drive on the beach, particularly north of Public Beach Access #3. If travel is required, allow extra time as some roads may be closed. Do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Take necessary actions to protect flood-prone property.
A High Surf Advisory is also in effect until this evening, October 10, at 7:00 PM CDT, with large breaking waves of 3 to 5 feet expected in the surf zone. Minor to moderate beach erosion is anticipated across the affected areas.
