Residents in the Lower Yampa River Basin and Eastern Uinta Mountains are advised to seek immediate shelter as a strong thunderstorm is currently impacting the area. The National Weather Service in Grand Junction, CO, issued a Special Weather Statement today, October 11, at 4:14 PM MDT, warning of wind gusts up to 55 mph and potential localized flooding.

As of 4:13 PM MDT, radar indicated a strong thunderstorm 21 miles northeast of Vernal, moving north at 45 mph. This storm is expected to remain over rural areas of north-central Uintah and northeastern Daggett Counties, including sections of U.S. Highway 191 in Utah between mile markers 373-380 and near mile marker 396.

The primary hazards are wind gusts of 50 to 55 mph, which could knock down tree limbs and displace unsecured objects. Additionally, torrential rainfall accompanying this storm may cause localized flooding. Do not attempt to drive through flooded roadways. Frequent cloud-to-ground lightning is also occurring, and residents should remember that lightning can strike up to 10 miles away from the thunderstorm. Seek safe shelter inside a building or vehicle immediately. This Special Weather Statement is effective until 4:45 PM MDT today, October 11.
