PERRY COUNTY — A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Perry County, including Beaumont, New Augusta, and Richton, by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Mobile, Alabama. This watch is in effect as of October 9 at 10:00 AM CDT. Residents are urged to act now to complete preparations before hazardous winds arrive.

Peak wind forecasts indicate speeds of 10-20 mph with gusts up to 45 mph are possible. There is potential for sustained winds of 39 to 57 mph. Damage could include porches, awnings, carports, sheds, and unanchored mobile homes. Large tree limbs may break, and some trees could snap or uproot. Scattered power and communications outages are also possible. Efforts to protect property should be underway.

While no additional significant rainfall is forecast, there is a potential for localized flooding. Residents in flood-vulnerable areas should consider protective actions and heed any flood watches and warnings. Rivers, tributaries, small streams, creeks, canals, and ditches may quickly rise. Floodwaters could enter some structures, and localized ponding may occur in low-lying areas.

The NWS currently indicates that tornadoes are not expected. For local information, contact the Perry County EMA at 601-964-8474 or visit www.facebook.com/perrycountyemd. For storm impacts, refer to www.weather.gov/mob.
