High Rip Current Risk, High Surf, Coastal Flood Advisory for Island Areas
A Rip Current Statement is in effect for Kenedy, Willacy, and Cameron Islands until Sunday morning, bringing a high risk of dangerous rip currents, high surf up to 7 feet, and minor coastal flooding.
Residents and visitors in Kenedy Island, Willacy Island, and Cameron Island are urged to exercise extreme caution due to a Rip Current Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Brownsville TX. The alert, effective from October 9 at 6:50 AM CDT, includes a High Rip Current Risk through Sunday morning, a High Surf Advisory until Saturday at 7 PM CDT, and a Coastal Flood Advisory until Sunday at 7 AM CDT.
Dangerous rip currents are expected, posing a significant threat to swimmers. Large breaking waves of 4 to 7 feet are anticipated in the surf zone, leading to dangerous swimming and surfing conditions. Minor coastal flooding is also expected, with water potentially reaching or pushing into the dunes on South Padre Island. This may make driving on the beach difficult for vehicles without four-wheel drive and high wheel bases, particularly north of Public Beach Access #3.
Minor to moderate beach erosion is also anticipated. Maximum inundation is expected to occur near high tide cycles each afternoon.
Actionable Information:
- Inexperienced swimmers should stay out of the water due to dangerous surf.
- If swimming, stay near a lifeguard.
- If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Do not swim against the current. Swim parallel to the shoreline if able. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
- If travel is required, allow extra time as some roads may close. Do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth.
- Take necessary actions to protect flood-prone property.
