Beachgoers in Kenedy Island, Willacy Island, and Cameron Island counties are advised that a Rip Current Statement has been issued. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Brownsville, TX, has warned of dangerous rip currents effective immediately, October 4, at 5:20 PM CDT, and continuing through Monday evening, October 5, until 7:00 PM CDT.

Rip currents can quickly sweep even experienced swimmers away from shore into deeper water. Residents and visitors to these island areas should exercise extreme caution.

The NWS advises that if you find yourself caught in a rip current, you should remain calm and float. Do not attempt to swim against the current. If possible, swim parallel to the shoreline to escape the current. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help. Always swim near a lifeguard when possible.

This Moderate Severity alert is in effect for Kenedy Island, Willacy Island, and Cameron Island through the specified period.
