Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Cheyenne and Rawlins Counties Until 7:45 PM CDT

Residents in east central Cheyenne and northwestern Rawlins Counties, Kansas, are advised to immediately seek shelter indoors due to a Severe Thunderstorm Warning issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Goodland, KS. The warning is in effect until 7:45 PM CDT tonight, September 18, 2026.

At 7:24 PM CDT, a severe thunderstorm was located 9 miles north of McDonald, or 14 miles southeast of Benkelman, moving northeast at 25 mph. The primary hazards are 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-size hail. The NWS indicates that radar confirmed these conditions.

Impacts are expected to include hail damage to vehicles and wind damage to roofs, siding, and trees. The storm is projected to remain over mainly rural areas, including Blakeman and Beardsley.

For your protection, move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building. This thunderstorm will produce strong winds, potentially causing near-zero visibility in blowing dirt. Exercise extreme caution if traveling and be alert for rapidly changing visibility. Accumulating hail may make driving hazardous, similar to snow or ice; be aware of rapidly changing road conditions if travel is necessary. Torrential rainfall is also occurring, which may lead to flash flooding. Do not drive through flooded roadways.
