Tropical Storm Warning Issued for Randolph, Flood Watch in Effect
A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for Randolph County, including Roanoke, effective immediately with a Flood Watch also in effect, according to the NWS.
RANDOLPH – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham, AL, has issued a Tropical Storm Warning for Randolph County, effective immediately as of October 9 at 9:56 PM CDT. The warning indicates severe conditions are expected, particularly in Roanoke.
While wind speeds are currently forecast to remain below tropical storm force, with peak gusts up to 50 mph, residents should remain vigilant. The NWS advises listening for instructions from local officials and ensuring emergency readiness in case the wind forecast changes. Little to no additional wind impacts are expected at this time, and officials are assessing current impacts.
A Flood Watch is also in effect, with an additional 1-3 inches of rainfall, and locally higher amounts, expected. This poses a potential for moderate flooding. Emergency plans should account for possible evacuations and rescues. Residents in flood-vulnerable areas should consider protective actions. Heed all flood watches and warnings; failure to act could result in serious injury or loss of life. Potential impacts include swollen rivers and tributaries, localized flooding in low-lying areas, and hazardous driving conditions. Some road and bridge closures are possible.
The tornado threat is currently low, with tornadoes not expected. Showers and thunderstorms with gusty winds may still occur. This Tropical Storm Warning is set to expire on October 10 at 6:00 AM UTC.
