Tropical Storm Watch Issued for Quitman, Georgetown; Prepare for Severe Weather
A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Quitman County, including Georgetown, by the NWS, warning of hazardous winds, moderate flooding, and potential tornadoes; residents should act now to prepare.
QUITMAN – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Tallahassee, FL, has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for Quitman County, specifically affecting Georgetown, effective October 8 at 11:05 PM EDT, and expiring October 9 at 7:15 AM UTC.
Residents should immediately begin preparations for hazardous winds, potential moderate flooding, and the possibility of tornadoes. The NWS forecasts peak winds of 10-20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph, with a potential for sustained winds of 39 to 57 mph. Damage to unsecured property, broken tree limbs, and power outages are possible.
A Flood Watch is also in effect, with 2-4 inches of rain expected, and locally higher amounts possible. This could lead to moderate rainfall flooding, swollen rivers, and hazardous driving conditions. Evacuations and rescues are possible in vulnerable areas.
The NWS indicates a situation favorable for tornadoes, with a potential for several, some possibly intense. These could cause significant damage, including loss of power and communications. Those in manufactured homes or on boats should prepare to relocate to safe shelter. Listen for tornado watches and warnings and be ready to shelter quickly if one is issued.
