Tropical Storm Watch Issued for Quitman and Georgetown, Prepare for Impacts
A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Quitman, specifically Georgetown, by NWS Tallahassee, warning of potential hazardous winds, significant flooding, and tornadoes starting October 8 at 5:22 PM EDT, urging residents to finalize preparations immediately.
Quitman residents, especially those in Georgetown, should immediately finalize preparations as a Tropical Storm Watch has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Tallahassee. The watch is effective from October 8 at 5:22 PM EDT and expires October 9 at 1:30 AM EDT. This alert indicates a potential for hazardous weather conditions, including strong winds, significant flooding, and tornadoes.
A Flood Watch is in effect, with 2-4 inches of rain expected, potentially leading to moderate flooding. Rivers and streams may overflow, and some roads could become impassable. Emergency plans should include the potential for moderate flooding. If you are in a flood-vulnerable area, consider protective actions. Heed any flood watches and warnings; failure to act may result in serious injury or loss of life.
Winds are forecast to reach 10-20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph, with a potential for sustained winds of 39 to 57 mph. Damage to lightweight structures, tree limbs, and some power outages are possible. Efforts to protect property should be underway now. Complete preparations before hazardous winds begin.
The NWS also indicates a favorable situation for tornadoes, with the potential for several, some possibly intense. Those in manufactured homes or on boats should prepare to relocate to safe shelter. Listen for tornado watches and warnings and be ready to shelter quickly if one is issued.
