A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Quitman and Georgetown, effective October 8 at 11:06 AM EDT, indicating potential for tropical storm-force winds, moderate flooding, and tornadoes within the next 48 hours.
QUITMAN, GA — The National Weather Service (NWS) in Tallahassee, FL, has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for Quitman and Georgetown, effective October 8 at 11:06 AM EDT. This means tropical storm-force winds are possible in these areas within the next 48 hours.
Residents in Georgetown should prepare for hazardous winds of 39 to 57 mph. Efforts to protect property should be underway now. Complete all preparations before winds become hazardous. Potential impacts include damage to unanchored structures, broken tree limbs, and scattered power outages.
A Flood Watch is also in effect, with forecasts predicting 1-3 inches of rain, with locally higher amounts. Emergency plans should account for moderate flooding, which could lead to evacuations and rescues. Heed any flood watches and warnings; failure to act may result in serious injury or loss of life. Rivers and small streams may overflow, and roads could become impassable.
The situation is also favorable for tornadoes. Emergency plans should include the potential for several tornadoes, some possibly intense. Those in manufactured homes or on boats should prepare to relocate to safe shelter. Listen for tornado watches and warnings; if a tornado warning is issued, be ready to shelter quickly.
This Tropical Storm Watch is set to expire on October 8, 2026, at 7:15 PM UTC. For more information, visit NWS Tallahassee or Georgia Emergency Management Agency.
