West Jordan Man Charged in Violent Draper Road Rage Shooting
National Desk
April 29, 2026
John Edward Orvis, 53, of West Jordan, was charged Wednesday in 3rd District Court with illegal discharge of a firearm, a second-degree felony, and two counts of aggravated assault and threatening to use a weapon in a fight, both third-degree felonies. All charges carry road rage penalty enhancements, which Utah prosecutors use to deter aggressive driving. Draper police arrested Orvis on Minuteman Drive after reports of the attacks.[2]
According to charging documents, Orvis fired at one vehicle and pointed a gun at another driver during the unprovoked incidents in the Salt Lake County suburb. Officers searching his truck discovered a handgun, assorted ammunition, methamphetamine, a spent shell casing, THC products and drug paraphernalia. He also faces charges as a restricted person in possession of a gun, drug possession, marijuana possession and possession of drug paraphernalia.[2]
The case underscores rising road rage concerns in Utah's Wasatch Front, where suburban corridors like I-15 and Bangerter Highway see frequent high-speed confrontations. In a separate incident, West Jordan's Nathan Schwendeman, 31, was charged with aggravated assault and reckless endangerment—also enhanced for road rage—after allegedly trying to hit a scooter rider with his vehicle multiple times. Schwendeman is held without bail in Utah County Jail.[1]
Draper police emphasized the enhancements' role in pushing safer roads amid Utah's population boom and traffic pressures.
