Garrett Nicholas, a 21-year-old junior business management major from Allentown, was crossing South High Street at Union Street around 1:30 a.m. Sunday when a car traveling along High Street struck him, propelling him approximately 70 feet, West Chester Borough Police reported.[1][2] The Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity brother was rushed to Paoli Hospital in Chester County, where he succumbed to his injuries hours later.[1][2][3] Nicholas' roommate was nearby at the time, underscoring the tragedy's proximity to student life in this bustling college borough west of Philadelphia.[2]
By Monday, April 13, a growing memorial of flowers and notes outside the Pi Kappa Alpha house on the 300 block of South High Street drew hundreds of West Chester University students and residents, many embracing in shared sorrow.[1][2][3] "West Chester is definitely feeling this and our fraternity is definitely feeling this," one student told reporters, describing Nicholas as "the happiest, just a happy, funny guy all the time, always smiling, always dancing."[1][3] West Chester University issued a statement activating campus counseling resources for grieving students, while a GoFundMe launched to support Nicholas' family.[1][3]
The driver pulled over a block away and is cooperating with investigators, who noted at least two passengers were in the vehicle, Chief Joshua Lee of West Chester Borough Police said.[2] Road markings from the scene lingered into Monday as the probe continued under the Chester County District Attorney's Office, with no charges or arrests announced by April 13.[1][2][3] Such fatalities near the 14,000-student campus highlight persistent pedestrian safety concerns in West Chester's walkable streets lined with bars and frat houses.
