Walmart Boosts Bentonville Distribution with Massive Expansion

BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Walmart Inc., the Bentonville-based retail behemoth, has launched a major expansion of its distribution center at 5801 S.W. Regional Airport Blvd., aiming to supercharge logistics in Northwest Arkansas. The project, building on the existing 1.2 million-square-foot facility that serves up to 1,000 U.S. stores, targets increased capacity for Midwest operations, according to company spokeswoman Anne Hatfield. Initially proposed in 2017 as "Project Maple," the adjacent 1.27 million-square-foot addition includes 1.03 million square feet of warehouse space, 216,000 square feet for shipping and 16,307 square feet of offices on a 120-acre site.[3][4][6]
The expansion, planned across from the current center, reserves room for a future 299,000-square-foot warehouse buildup, signaling long-term commitment to Bentonville's logistics infrastructure. Hatfield emphasized Northwest Arkansas' appeal for distribution needs, dismissing e-commerce focus but underscoring regional logistics gains. City planners reviewed the proposal in April 2017, with construction details emerging as Walmart integrates it into broader investments like its 350-acre headquarters campus — Arkansas' largest corporate project — featuring 20 buildings, trails and amenities set for completion later this year.[1][3]
This development arrives amid Walmart's aggressive 2026 push: 650 store remodels and 20 new openings through early 2027, alongside facilities like the 2023 Market Fulfillment Center at Store 100 (406 S. Walton Blvd.), the state's first for accelerated pickup and delivery. Economists project hundreds of jobs from the distribution upgrade, bolstering Bentonville's evolution into a corporate hub where "all roads lead back to Walmart." Civic leaders view the site as the city's emerging heart, driving employment and growth in a region anchored by the Walton family legacy.[1][2][5]
