USC Expands Teacher Support as South Carolina Battles Classroom Shortage

National Desk
April 26, 2026
The University of South Carolina's College of Education continues to expand its arsenal against South Carolina's teacher shortage through multiple programs designed to support educators before, during, and after their first years in the classroom. The flagship Carolina Teacher Induction Program (CarolinaTIP), which has served more than 500 teachers since 2017, recently secured a $300,000 grant from Power:Ed, the philanthropy of the SC Student Loan Corporation, to bring comprehensive induction support to the Pee Dee region—one of South Carolina's hardest-hit areas for teacher attrition. CarolinaTIP's expansion will support up to 45 novice teachers in the first Pee Dee cohort through a three-year program that combines teacher sessions, personalized coaching from experienced educators, and peer communities—all at no cost to participants. The program recognized 51 teachers completing the program in 2024, underscoring the scale of USC's efforts to bridge the gap between teacher preparation and classroom reality. Beyond the induction model, USC's College of Education collaborates with school districts across the state to address what university leaders describe as a systemic challenge to South Carolina's public education system. The university's multi-pronged approach reflects growing recognition that teacher shortages require sustained, long-term intervention. CarolinaTIP is designed to increase teacher self-efficacy and build professional foundations during the critical first three years—a period when attrition typically peaks. By aligning support to the specific needs of first-, second-, and third-year teachers, the program addresses the evolving challenges educators face as they transition from college classrooms to managing their own students. With the Pee Dee expansion, USC's induction programs now reach districts facing some of the state's most acute staffing challenges. Education leaders point to programs like CarolinaTIP as essential infrastructure for stabilizing South Carolina's teaching force and ensuring that ambitious new teachers stay in the profession long enough to develop expertise and make lasting impact in their communities.
