Tyson Foods Expands Springdale Plant with $127M Cargill Acquisition
National Desk
April 18, 2026
Tyson Foods officially purchased the former Cargill turkey processing plant in Springdale in December 2025, marking a strategic move to strengthen its poultry division in Arkansas. The company acquired the facility for $23 million and secured an industrial revenue bond ordinance valued at up to $127 million to purchase and upgrade the property, according to reporting on the transaction.
Under the arrangement with the city of Springdale, the municipality takes technical ownership of the facility and leases it back to Tyson through a payment-in-lieu-of-taxes (PILOT) agreement. This structure allows the company to avoid paying full property taxes for 10 years, after which Tyson will assume full ownership of the plant. The agreement reflects the city's commitment to retaining major employers in the region.
The acquisition comes as Tyson continues to invest heavily in its Arkansas operations. In April 2021, the company announced a $48 million investment in its Pine Bluff poultry plant, which created nearly 70 jobs and expanded fully cooked processing lines producing chicken tenders, strips, wings, and air-fried products. The Springdale facility will similarly focus on chicken processing, though sourcing details remain unclear.
The plant's location within the Arkansas portion of the Illinois River Watershed places it within a region subject to environmental scrutiny. In January 2026, a federal court ordered Tyson Foods and other poultry companies to pay for cleanup and long-term oversight of the watershed following nearly 20 years of litigation, with Tyson assessed $160,000 in fines.
The Springdale expansion underscores Tyson's commitment to Northwest Arkansas, where the company maintains its corporate headquarters in Springdale and operates multiple facilities. The investment positions the poultry processor to increase its regional capacity and maintain its dominance in the state's food production sector.
