Tony Way Challenge Run Honors Fallen Officer

North Charleston recruits preparing for the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy participated in the Tony Way Challenge Run this morning, May 3, 2026, honoring fallen officer Robert Anthony “Tony” Way.

Officer Way tragically lost his life in the line of duty in February 1985. The commemorative run began on Tony Way Boulevard, adjacent to the North Charleston Coliseum, and concluded at the exact site of Officer Way’s death on Rivers Avenue, a major thoroughfare in North Charleston, near Mall Drive.

As part of the experience, the recruits paused at the conclusion of the run to read the incident report detailing the tragic events of that night. They also observed a moment of silence, paying tribute to Officer Way’s courage, service, and ultimate sacrifice to the Lowcountry community.
