The Books of God
Vero Beach residents are invited to explore a unique collection of religious texts and historical documents at the Indian River County Main Library this month, situated in the heart of Florida's Treasure Coast. The special exhibit, titled "The Books of God," showcases a variety of sacred writings from different faiths, offering a glimpse into the spiritual heritage that shapes communities worldwide.
Organized by the Friends of the Indian River County Library, the exhibit features meticulously preserved copies of the Bible, Torah, Quran, and other foundational texts. Each display includes informational placards detailing the history, significance, and cultural impact of the respective scriptures. Local historian and long-time Vero Beach resident, Dr. Eleanor Vance, consulted on the historical accuracy and presentation of the materials.
“This exhibit is a wonderful opportunity for our community to engage with the rich tapestry of human belief,” stated Library Director, Martha Jenkins, during a preview event yesterday. “It’s about understanding, appreciating, and learning from the diverse spiritual journeys that have guided people for centuries. We believe it fosters a deeper sense of connection and respect among our neighbors.”
The collection includes a rare 19th-century family Bible donated by the descendants of one of Vero Beach’s founding families, the O’Malley’s, as well as a beautifully illuminated manuscript page from a medieval prayer book, on loan from a private collector in the area. Visitors can also see early printed editions of various religious works, highlighting the evolution of printing and dissemination of knowledge.
The "Books of God" exhibit is free and open to the public during regular library hours at the Indian River County Main Library, located at 1600 21st Street, Vero Beach. It will run through April 30, 2026. The library encourages school groups and community organizations to schedule visits in advance to ensure a guided experience.
