State Agencies Partner to Reinforce Distracted Driving Laws in Lake City
Lake City residents are reminded to keep their eyes on the road and hands off their phones as the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) teams up with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and local law enforcement to promote the "Put It Down: Focus on Driving" campaign.
This statewide initiative aims to educate Floridians about the Wireless Communications While Driving Law, Section 316.305, Florida Statutes, which has been in effect since July 1, 2019. The law specifically mandates that drivers put down their mobile devices and concentrate solely on operating their vehicles.
While the law has been in place for several years, the ongoing campaign emphasizes the critical importance of avoiding distractions behind the wheel. Local law enforcement in Lake City will be participating in efforts to raise awareness and enforce the regulations, ensuring safer roads for everyone in our community.
Distracted driving remains a significant factor in accidents across the state, and Lake City is no exception, with risks on major routes like US 90 and I-75. Officials hope that renewed attention to this law will encourage drivers to make responsible choices, reducing the risk of collisions and injuries.
The "Put It Down: Focus on Driving" campaign highlights that using a wireless communications device for texting, typing, or reading while driving is illegal. While hands-free devices are permitted, the spirit of the law encourages drivers to minimize all potential distractions.
Residents are urged to familiarize themselves with the specifics of the law and to practice safe driving habits. The goal is to foster a culture of attentiveness on Lake City's streets and highways, from the historic downtown district to surrounding neighborhoods, protecting drivers, passengers, pedestrians, and cyclists alike.
