South Florida Rep. Cherfilus-McCormick Resigns Ahead of Ethics Sanctions

National Desk
April 22, 2026
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — U.S. Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, a Democrat representing Florida's 20th Congressional District in Broward and Palm Beach counties, submitted her resignation on Thursday, effective immediately, just hours before the House Ethics Committee convened at 2 p.m. to consider disciplinary action against her. In her statement, she wrote, 'I hereby resign from the 119th Congress, effective immediately.' The committee's investigative subcommittee had concluded she violated multiple House rules, with potential penalties ranging from formal sanctions to a recommendation for expulsion — the most severe measure short of a full House vote.[1] The ethics probe centers on allegations that millions of dollars in taxpayer funds were improperly routed to Cherfilus-McCormick's former company, Trinity Healthcare, then funneled into her campaign coffers. Investigators found substantial evidence she was aware of the activity, accusing her of 25 separate violations of House regulations on campaign finance and misuse of public funds. Cherfilus-McCormick claimed the committee denied her adequate time to prepare a defense, adding to the controversy in her South Florida district, which spans urban areas like Miramar, Lauderhill and parts of West Palm Beach.[1][2] Compounding the ethics case is a pending federal criminal trial, delayed until February 2027, where Cherfilus-McCormick faces charges of stealing $5 million in coronavirus disaster relief funds through overpayments to Trinity Healthcare. The dual probes have tarnished her tenure since winning the seat in a 2022 special election, representing a diverse, Democratic-leaning constituency in Florida's southeastern corridor. Her abrupt exit is the third resignation from a House member in little more than a week, highlighting intensifying scrutiny on congressional conduct.[1][2]
