Snidely Whiplash: A Local Mystery

Residents across Palm Beach County have been left scratching their heads this week following a series of unusual, yet harmless, incidents attributed to an individual or group operating under the moniker "Snidely Whiplash." The peculiar occurrences, which began appearing last Monday, April 1, have involved the strategic placement of oversized, handlebar-style mustaches on various public statues and prominent local landmarks.

The first reported incident involved the bronze statue of Addison Mizner on glamorous Worth Avenue in Palm Beach, which was found sporting a meticulously crafted, albeit temporary, black mustache. Similar sightings have since been reported at the Old School Square in Delray Beach's historic downtown, where the historic school bell was adorned, and even on the iconic Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse, though the latter was quickly removed by lighthouse staff.

While the acts are purely aesthetic and have caused no damage, they have certainly sparked conversation at local diners and coffee shops from the upscale enclaves of Boca Raton to the coastal charm of Tequesta. "It's certainly a strange thing to wake up to," commented Martha Jenkins, a long-time resident of West Palm Beach, while enjoying her morning coffee at Johan's Joe. "You can't help but wonder who's behind it."

Local authorities have confirmed they are aware of the incidents but state that no formal complaints of vandalism have been filed, given the non-destructive nature of the mustache placements. The identity of "Snidely Whiplash" remains unknown, adding a touch of whimsical mystery to the daily lives of Palm Beach County residents.
