Severe Thunderstorm Warning Issued for Northwestern Elbert County

Residents in northwestern Elbert County, Colorado, are advised to seek immediate shelter as a Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued by the National Weather Service in Denver. The warning is in effect until 10:45 PM MDT tonight, September 20, 2026.

As of 10:06 PM MDT, a severe thunderstorm was located near Elizabeth, approximately 35 miles southeast of Denver, moving southeast at 20 mph. The primary hazards associated with this storm are 60 mph wind gusts and half-dollar-sized hail. Trained spotters have already reported quarter-sized hail near Elizabeth.

Impacts from this storm are expected to include damage to vehicles, roofs, siding, and trees. Hail accumulation on roadways may also lead to hazardous travel conditions.

Affected locations include Elbert, Elizabeth, Kiowa, Ponderosa Park, and Fondis.

The National Weather Service strongly advises all residents in the warned area to seek shelter inside a well-built structure and to stay away from windows. This storm is capable of producing damaging winds and has already produced large hail. Remain vigilant until the warning expires.
