Strong Thunderstorm: High Winds and Hail Possible in Western Kiowa County

A Special Weather Statement has been issued for Western Kiowa County due to a strong thunderstorm. Residents in the affected area, particularly those in north central Kiowa County, should be aware of potential wind gusts and hail.

The National Weather Service in Pueblo CO reported the storm at 11:10 PM MDT on September 20. Doppler radar indicates the storm is located 10 miles northeast of Haswell, or 41 miles west of Cheyenne Wells, moving southeast at 15 mph.

The primary hazards include wind gusts of 50 to 55 mph and nickel-sized hail. Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Minor hail damage to vegetation is possible.

This Special Weather Statement is effective immediately and expires at 12:00 AM MDT on September 21. If outdoors, consider seeking shelter inside a building. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect for southeastern Colorado until 3:00 AM MDT.
