Safety Harbor Pier Reopens After $3 Million Reconstruction, Two Years After Hurricane Damage

Safety Harbor's iconic pier has reopened to the public after nearly two years of closure following extensive hurricane damage. The waterfront structure, a beloved community landmark, sustained over $3 million in damage during the 2024 storm season.

Hurricane Debby first struck in August 2024, weakening the pier before Hurricanes Helene and Milton delivered the final blows. The city secured funding for the extensive repairs through state aid, FEMA, and insurance payouts. The pier rebuild alone cost under $1.26 million, coming in below the projected budget.

Crews reconstructed the pier from scratch, also fixing sections of the nearby boardwalk and replacing damaged lights along the walking path. Both the marina and pier now feature stronger construction designed to withstand future storms. The rebuilt pier matches its old design but includes improved Americans with Disabilities Act accommodations.

Mayor Joe Ayoub emphasized the pier's personal and community importance. He noted the structure needed updates even before the 2024 hurricanes. "I love it," Ayoub said. "I used to bring my two little daughters here all the time when they were little, and we’d go watch the sunrise when they wake up too early, and now I have a third daughter, and she’s been deprived of going on the pier. She’s only one. So now I get to bring her out here, let her enjoy the sunrise just like her older sisters. So, for me personally, I’m excited. I love spending time out there, especially with the family, and I know the whole city is excited too.”

Resident Joshua Paul Hooks expressed relief and joy at the reopening. “It’s the greatest feeling,” Hooks told Bay News 9. “It took forever. You know, two years goes by, but it felt like forever, and I think it felt so long because this is a nightly ritual for the family, right? We all come down and the kids play in the park over here, and you come out, you fish. You take a walk. You enjoy the breeze.”

The pier's closure impacted local businesses. Tom Bassano, owner of Bassano Cheesecake Cafe, observed a slowdown in his business while the pier was inaccessible. Its return promises a boost for nearby establishments and a renewed sense of normalcy for residents.
