Punta Gorda City Council Approves New Sidewalk Project for Taylor Road
Punta Gorda City Council voted unanimously last night, April 7, 2026, to approve the construction of new sidewalks along a significant stretch of Taylor Road. The project aims to enhance pedestrian safety and connectivity for residents in the area, particularly those accessing local businesses and the nearby Gilchrist Park, a cherished waterfront spot along the Peace River.
The new sidewalks will span from the intersection of Taylor Road and West Marion Avenue, extending south to the entrance of the Punta Gorda Middle School. This initiative addresses long-standing concerns from residents regarding the lack of safe walking paths in this busy corridor. Funding for the project, estimated at $450,000, will come from the city's capital improvement budget, as outlined in the recent budget approval.
Construction is anticipated to begin in late summer, with a projected completion by early next year. City Engineer, Sarah Jenkins, stated during the council meeting that the project will include ADA-compliant ramps and improved crosswalks at key intersections. Further details regarding construction timelines and potential traffic impacts will be announced by the Public Works Department in the coming weeks.
