Police-Involved Shooting in Wynwood Leaves 2 Dead, 1 Injured
National Desk
May 11, 2026
Two people were pronounced dead at Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center and a third person sustained injuries following a police-involved shooting in Wynwood around 3 a.m. Saturday, according to Miami Police Department spokesperson Officer Michael Vega. The shooting occurred near Northwest First Court and 23rd Street, a busy stretch lined with late-night establishments including 1-800-Lucky, El Patio Wynwood, and the Dirty Rabbit that typically close between 2 and 3 a.m.
Officers who were patrolling the area as part of routine overnight coverage observed an armed male and subsequently engaged, with multiple officers discharging their weapons during the confrontation, Vega said. The armed man was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. A woman who was also struck by gunfire was transported to the same facility and pronounced dead. Police have not yet confirmed the identities of the deceased or detailed the circumstances that led to the initial confrontation.
A third person sustained a hand injury during the incident and was transported for treatment. Police have not clarified whether this injury was caused by police gunfire or another source. None of the officers involved in the shooting were injured, Vega confirmed.
Multiple witnesses were present at the scene and were interviewed at Miami Police Department headquarters. Cellphone video obtained by local news outlets captured the immediate aftermath of the gunfire, showing a man lying motionless on the ground as emergency sirens blared. The investigation remains ongoing under the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, which conducts mandatory inquiries in all police-involved shooting incidents.
This marks the second shooting incident reported in Wynwood within a week, adding to ongoing public safety concerns in Miami's popular arts and entertainment district. As South Florida continues to grapple with broader crime patterns alongside the state's foreclosure crisis and insurance cost surge, incidents in high-traffic nightlife areas underscore persistent safety challenges for residents and business owners.
