The Pentagon has announced plans to provide a live stream of the execution of Nidal Hasan, the former Army major convicted of killing 13 people in the 2009 Fort Hood shooting. The execution is scheduled for December 3 in Texas.
Army officials did not specify the intended audience for the live stream, nor did they detail the mechanism for its distribution. Hasan received a death sentence in 2013 for his role in the November 5, 2009, attack at Fort Hood, Texas. A military court convicted him on 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder. He conducted the attack while serving as an Army psychiatrist.
Hasan has remained on death row at the United States Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. The federal government has historically carried out executions through lethal injection. However, a military court sentenced Hasan to death by firing squad.
Legal challenges and appeals in military capital cases can extend for years or decades. The scheduling of Hasan's execution follows the exhaustion of his appeals process within the military justice system. The Department of Defense has not publicly released additional details regarding the execution protocol or the logistics of the live stream.
