Okeechobee Man Dies in Single-Vehicle Tractor-Trailer Crash on US 441

Staff Writer
April 9, 2026

A 58-year-old Okeechobee man was killed yesterday morning, April 7, 2026, in a single-vehicle tractor-trailer crash on US 441 in Fort Lauderdale. The incident occurred around 7:00 AM near the intersection of US 441 (State Road 7) and NW 19th Street in the Riverland area, causing significant traffic delays for several hours.

According to preliminary reports, the driver was traveling southbound on US 441 when, for reasons currently under investigation, his tractor-trailer veered off the roadway. The vehicle then struck a concrete barrier and overturned. Emergency services responded quickly to the scene, but the driver was pronounced deceased at the site of the crash.

Fort Lauderdale Police Department and Florida Highway Patrol units were on scene to manage traffic and investigate the circumstances leading to the accident. Southbound lanes of US 441 were closed or heavily restricted for much of the morning as crews worked to clear the wreckage and conduct their investigation. Drivers were advised to seek alternate routes, with many local commuters in Broward County experiencing longer than usual travel times.

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the deceased, pending notification of next of kin. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and officials have not indicated if speed, impairment, or a mechanical issue were contributing factors. Further details are expected to be released as the investigation progresses.

This tragic incident serves as a somber reminder of the importance of road safety, especially on busy thoroughfares like US 441, which is a vital artery for both local and commercial traffic through Fort Lauderdale.
