Minneapolis police arrested 24-year-old John Carroll, a known gang member, following a mass shooting at 1:59 a.m. Saturday in the 300 block of N. First Avenue near the Monarch nightclub in the Warehouse District.[1][3] The incident erupted when two men in a crowd outside the club argued and drew guns, firing into the throng and striking 10 victims: five men and five women.[1] Two men died, including University of St. Thomas mechanical engineering student Charlie Johnson, who was killed hours before his Saturday graduation; one man remains in critical condition, while seven others suffered non-life-threatening injuries treated at metro hospitals.[1]
Officers nearby heard the gunfire and rushed to a "very chaotic scene" with victims on the ground and panicked revelers fleeing, Minneapolis Police spokesman John Elder said.[1] Investigators believe one deceased man was a gunman, the other an innocent bystander, with Carroll identified as the surviving shooter via surveillance video.[1][3] Bloomington police apprehended him Saturday afternoon; he is held in Hennepin County Jail on probable murder charges with $1 million bail, facing initial court Thursday at 1:30 p.m.[1][3]
The shooting, captured on cameras showing Carroll allegedly grabbing a gun from an SUV before firing into the crowd, came hours after a separate fatal incident Friday evening in the Jordan neighborhood.[1][2][3] Minneapolis Downtown Council President Steve Cramer condemned the "reckless, irresponsible and criminal behavior," while the tragedy underscores persistent violence plaguing the city's nightlife hubs like Nicollet Mall and the Warehouse District.[1]
