Minder App Offers Niche Matchmaking for Miami's Muslim Community
Miami residents seeking a life partner within the Muslim faith now have a dedicated platform, Minder, which launched in 2015 and has since garnered over a million downloads worldwide. The app, inspired by the popular Tinder, was developed by 35-year-old Harvard graduate Harun Mokhtarzada, the son of Afghan immigrants.
Mokhtarzada, who resides in Washington with his wife and three children, created Minder after observing the challenges some of his single associates faced in finding suitable partners. The app's name itself is a portmanteau of "Tinder" and "Muslim," reflecting its specific focus. Unlike general dating apps, Minder's primary aim is to facilitate connections for marriage, aligning with the stricter dating rules often found in Muslim culture.
The service was initially available in the United States and Great Britain, later expanding to Germany and other European countries. Registration on Minder requires a Facebook account, which simplifies the process by pulling profile photos. Users can upload additional images, and all submitted data undergoes a verification process that can take up to 24 hours before full app access is granted.
A unique feature of Minder is the "Barometer" function, which allows users to voluntarily indicate their religiosity. While optional, providing this information can increase a user's popularity and trustworthiness within the community. The app emphasizes that it is not for casual dating but for individuals serious about finding a husband or wife.
The search functionality mirrors Tinder's swipe mechanism: swiping left to dismiss a profile and right to express interest. A "match" occurs when two users swipe right on each other, enabling them to communicate. For those who wish to take a break from their search without permanently deleting their profile, Minder offers an "Undiscoverable" feature in the settings, making their profile invisible to others. Should a user decide to permanently remove their account, all associated data, including conversations and matches, will be deleted.
