May Is Motorcycle Awareness Month: Do You Have the Right Coverage?
As May approaches, bringing with it warmer weather and an increase in motorcycle activity on Lake Mary roads, local authorities and insurance professionals are reminding residents about Motorcycle Awareness Month. This annual observance, recognized nationwide, aims to promote safety for motorcyclists and encourage drivers to be more vigilant.
For many Lake Mary riders, the start of spring means dusting off their bikes for leisurely rides through areas like the Lake Mary Boulevard corridor, past the historic downtown oval, or along Country Club Road. While the open road offers freedom, it also comes with responsibilities, particularly regarding safety and adequate insurance coverage.
Local insurance agents, such as those at Smith & Sons Insurance on West Lake Mary Boulevard, often see an uptick in inquiries about motorcycle policies this time of year. "It's crucial for riders to review their coverage before hitting the road," stated Sarah Jenkins, a senior agent at Smith & Sons. "Many assume their auto policy extends to their motorcycle, but that's rarely the case. Specific motorcycle insurance is designed to cover unique risks, from collision and comprehensive to uninsured motorist protection and custom parts coverage."
Beyond insurance, the Lake Mary Police Department emphasizes the importance of rider training and defensive driving for all motorists. "We encourage everyone to share the road safely," commented Officer David Miller, a spokesperson for the Lake Mary Police Department. "Motorcyclists should always wear appropriate gear, and drivers of cars and trucks need to actively look for motorcycles, especially when changing lanes or turning."
Residents are encouraged to use May as a reminder to check their motorcycle insurance policies, ensure their bikes are in good working order, and for all drivers, to practice heightened awareness on Lake Mary's tree-lined streets. Being prepared and vigilant can help ensure a safe riding season for everyone in our community.
