Marine Recruit from Cumberland County Faces Discharge Over Antisemitic Signs

Kaleb Ott, 19, of Mount Holly Springs in Cumberland County, was charged Monday with ethnic intimidation and harassment after Pennsylvania State Police linked him to antisemitic signs discovered at six homes in South Middleton Township at the end of January.[1][2][3] On Jan. 31, a Boiling Springs High School teacher, known to be Jewish, reported finding two homemade signs outside their home: one reading 'Anne Frank’s Diary was a Fake!' and another featuring a swastika.[1][4] Investigators identified Ott through fingerprints on the signs, which were on file due to his enlistment as a recruit at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in Parris Island, South Carolina.[1][2]
The probe expanded on Feb. 3 when a Fairview Street resident reported a sign stating 'Israel Controls America,' leading troopers to uncover four more victims on the same street, none of whom were Jewish.[4][5] Ott, who graduated from Boiling Springs High School in 2025, had a documented history of antisemitic comments toward the targeted teacher, according to court records.[1][3] In an interview, Ott confessed to creating the signs months earlier with a 17-year-old accomplice before shipping out for basic training; he drove the teen to the teacher's yard but claimed the younger individual suggested the placement.[1]
The U.S. Marine Corps announced plans to process Ott for entry-level separation, citing its commitment to the highest standards of conduct amid his ongoing legal proceedings.[2] Ott awaits a preliminary hearing in Cumberland County Court, as documented online.[2] The case underscores rising concerns over antisemitism in rural Pennsylvania communities like South Middleton Township, population around 13,000, nestled between Harrisburg and Gettysburg.[1][2]
